According to the International
Business Times, China has arrested 288 individuals in 56 different
countries accused of various financial crimes. The program, known as “Operation
Fox Hunt,” was primarily aimed at corrupt public officials and is part of
China’s larger efforts to clamp down on corruption. Because the officials are
scattered across the globe, China has been forced to act through local law
enforcement which has led to varying effectiveness and results across regions.
China estimates that over the past 20 years nearly 18,000 officials have left
the country, taking roughly $129 billion in assets with them.
