September Marks 50th Anniversary of Tumultuous UN Session

Kristen McCannon

The New York Times this week chronicled the United Nations General Assembly Session of 1964, one of the most disruptive and challenging in the organization’s history. During this tumultuous period, the United States delayed voting because the Soviet Union had failed to pay its bill, the People’s Republic of China waged a campaign to expel Taiwan, and an individual fired a bazooka at the United Nations headquarters. If nothing else, the article sets a high bar for the would-be disruptors of the United Nations today.
