U.S. and Canada Fight over Meat

By Jieying Ding

The WTO recently decided that a 2013 rule from U.S. Department of Agriculture requiring disclosure of the national origin of beef, pork and other meat sold in the U.S. was discriminatory, according to The Wall Street Journal. Canada and Mexico, who want to protect their exports, welcomed the decision, but the Obama administration is seeking to appeal it. Canadian officials are angered by the Obama administration’s decision to appeal, threatening retaliation for violations of international trade. Canada also accused the U.S. of engaging in a blatantly protectionist fashion by seeking an appellate review.
