The
Economist, a strong advocate of E.U. and U.S. action against Russia's
Ukrainian campaign, questioned the effectiveness of both the current sanctions
and of economic sanctions in general. The article contained a chart
suggesting that UN-sponsored sanctions have proven less effective than common
knowledge has suggested, and the sanctions against Russia also lack UNSC
support. On the other hand, as The Economist notes, sanctions may still prove a
useful bargaining chip in upcoming negotiations.
