EU Revises List of Fishing Sanctions

By Stephen Levy

The European Union, in its quest to address everything but its own economic struggles, produced the summary of the review of its list of non-EU countries failing to cooperate with it on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing on October 14th. The European Commission, the executive body of the EU, suggested both adding and removing several countries from the list, which reviews 15% of all commercial fishing. Belize, which had been added in March, was suggested for removal from the list, allowing EU flagged ships to fish in Belize’s fisheries, as well as permitting Belizean fish product imports. The EU also lifted yellow cards (be more European, Europe) on Panama and several other countries, while also identifying Sri Lanka as a non-cooperating third party, meaning the EU will forbid imports from Sri Lanka unless the nation cooperates and implements changes in its fishing programs.
