West African Organization Calls for Negotiations Before Sanctions on Burkina Faso

By Stephen Levy

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) urged outside states and organizations not to impose sanctions on Burkina Faso despite the two military coups, the Daily Mail notes, on November 8th. ECOWAS deployed Mack Sall, the President of Senegal, as a mediator with the current government, led by Lieutenant Colonel Yacouba Isaac Zida. ECOWAS supports a yearlong transition before elections, while the current government has not yet set a deadline for handing over power but meets with civilian groups. The African Union, on the other hand, stated that the military government would receive two weeks to transition power over to civilians before it would apply sanctions.
