The
African Union recently concluded
a high level delegation to Burundi, consisting of five Heads of
State from neighboring countries to assess the extent of the political crisis
in the country. The delegation was spearheaded by South African President Jacob
Zuma, who was a former mediator in the Burundi peace talks between the
transition government and the rebels in 2000. Violence in Burundi has seen an
increase, with ethnic based violence coming to the forefront and neighboring
countries using the crisis as a grab for power. The
delegation marks a reversal in AU policy and a positive intervention by a
coalition of African leaders to mediate the crisis and push for peace.
